Yerevan Hackathon[YAN] 2011
Yerevan Hackathon[YAN] 2011 is a contest-festival of innovative ideas and projects aimed at solving the problems existing in Yerevan, through the use of new technologies and projects encouraging user engagement (web sites, mobile applications, etc).
The contest has been initiated by Microsoft Innovation Center in Armenia and Public Journalism Club NGO, as a branch of the US-based Hacks/Hackers organization.
What is a Hackathon? Hachathon is a Silicon Valley-generated extensive contest aimed at solving existing problems through collaborative computer programming and new technologies.
What is the specific character of Yerevan Hackathon [YAN] Yerevan 2011? It is dedicated to solving the problems existing in Yerevan. The result of this Hackhathon is most likely to be the creation of a number of prototypes for ready-made projects (concerning transportation system, garbage disposal, tourism, sign installation, improvement of city/citizen relations, development of resources for journalistic community for the correct reporting on the city issues, etc.) that can be implemented not only by municipal government but also by the structures and circles focused on the city issues.
Purpose: Offer creative and innovative people an opportunity to collaboratively build programs aimed at resolving city issues. Build a collaborative atmosphere for both programmers and nonprogrammers for implementing innovative ideas and initiating social reforms. Encourage collaboration between representatives of information technologies and other fields aimed at the implementation of ideas serving the public interest.
Format: Yerevan Hackathon[YAN] Yerevan 2011 round-the-clock event will take place at Yerevan municipality hall, and all teams will be required to be present at the competition venue.
The organizers of the event will provide all necessary conditions – food, Internet, etc. During the 24 hours of the contest, the teams will have to create/program the prototypes of their projects that will be shown in one minute presentations to the public and panel of experts at the end of the Yerevan Hachathon[YAN] Contest on 18 December.
Participation Conditions: The teams must include both programmers and nonprogrammers, hacks and hackers – experts, journalists, bloggers and specialists of the field which is connected to the suggested projects. The organizers can also help you engage experts, programmers and new members in the team.
The teams/team representatives should participate in meetings preceding due to take place in November. During these meetings, the experts will present the issues of most concern to the city residents. These meetings will help the teams build more purposeful programs.
Yerevan Hackathon[YAN] Contest 2011 will start on 17 December and will last 24 hours. The teams will have to publicly present their platforms, applications and web sites to the panel on December 18.
